W. Donegal Approves Moose Lodge’s Plan to Move Into Former VFW Post Building

West Donegal Township supervisors have unanimously approved an application from Moose Lodge 596 to transfer its liquor license from 18 N. Market St. in Elizabethtown Borough to the former Veterans of Foreign Wars post building at 126 Maytown Road.

Lodge Administrator Denver McDowell said the Elizabethtown lodge, which was chartered 107 years ago, has more than 500 members now and hopes to expand to about 700 to 800 members in the new location. He noted that the local lodge had given $29,738 to charity last year and that it is one of many Moose lodges, which exist in all states of the USA as well as in Canada and England.

“The Elizabethtown lodge is now looking into the future,” McDowell said of its plans to move into a more modern building.

The building on Maytown Road opened in December of 2007, replacing an earlier VFW post building. The property sits at the border of Elizabethtown Borough and West Donegal Township, with the building in the township but the parking lot in the borough. Fred Barley VFW Post 5667 closed the building in 2018 and put it up for sale.

The Moose building at 18 N. Market St. is up for sale with an asking price of $425,000. It was built in 1924 and formerly housed a movie theater; the marquee from the theater is still there. It has a ballroom with a stage on the second floor.

Air conditioning units and the roof were replaced in 2018, according to the real estate agent’s description of the property online. That description says, “This facility could serve many different purposes ranging from a restaurant, distillery, classic hotel, ample parking on site. Many possibilities.”
