The Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce awards seven different scholarships to prospective business leaders in the community throughout each year. The chamber most recently awarded scholarships to three local students. The winners and their families were treated to lunch at the June 12 chamber luncheon where they were also recognized as 2019 scholarship winners.
The $1,000 Continuing Education Award was presented to Carrie Whitlock, who is employed by the Milanof-Schock Library as their circulation assistant and passport acceptance agent while working on her master of library and information science degree from Clarion University.
The $1,000 High School Graduate Continuing Education Award was presented to Nyla Naqvi, who just graduated from Donegal High School and will be continuing her education at Franklin & Marshall College where she will major in biology.
The $500 Dorothy Metzler Memorial Scholarship was presented to Amanda Ellenberger, who has been a student at Harrisburg Area Community College, Lancaster, but will be transferring to Central Penn College this fall for their occupational therapy assistant program.
The Mount Joy Chamber Scholarship Team for these three awards consisted of chamber members Jan Johnson, Holly Noll, Galen Dise and Judy Raub. Every application had to be submitted with an essay, letters of recommendation and high school or college transcripts. The team reads over all of the applications, essays, letters of recommendation, etc., and from there decides whom they will call in for an interview process. After the interview process, the team makes the decision of who the scholarship recipients will be. The team members say that this is always a very difficult decision because all the applicants are very worthy of a scholarship.
The Mount Joy Chamber also sponsors two $500 scholarships which are awarded at Donegal’s yearly Awards Night and the chamber also awards two $500 scholarships to two local students who attend The Janus School.
