Nine Elizabethtown Area Middle School band students recently took part in the 2019 Lebanon Valley College Middle School band festival. The students, all seventh graders, were selected based on their teacher’s recommendation for demonstrating outstanding musicianship.
The students were Sophia Merlo, clarinet; Nathan Merlo, trumpet; Emily Phillips, french horn; Bradley Kreider, Rowan Meiser, Trevor Merlo, Jillian Wivell, trombone; Carter Ketchum, euphonium; and Colin Rilatt, tuba. Lynnette Fetzer directs Elizabethtown’s middle school band program.
“Students get the music the morning of the festival and spend the day rehearsing for an evening concert,” said Fetzer. “This takes a lot of skill to be able to sight read and rehearse music in one day.”
The festival was held on the campus of Lebanon Valley College on Jan. 10 and was sponsored by the Lebanon Valley College chapter of the National Association on Music Educators. The bands were directed by Lebanon Valley College senior music education students.
The event included a full day of rehearsals culminating with a community concert in the evening. The “Band Fest” featured over 200 middle school students from area schools.
