EAHS Girls Tennis Falls to LCD, Gets First Win at Solanco

Through its first four matches of the season, the Elizabethtown Area High School girls tennis was extremely competitive on the court. Alas, that effort yielded no victories. Luckily for the Lady Bears, the win finally came during the fifth match.

The team hosted Lancaster Country Day on Thursday, Aug. 29, in what turned out to be an exciting match. The Cougars were a semifinalist in the Class 2A District 3 playoffs last season, so the Lady Bears had a tough task on their hands. They battled hard but ultimately fell 3-2.

Senior Kate Weissend earned her first career singles in the No. 2 spot, topping Olivia Sullivan 6-4, 6-3. Senior Anna Bert and sophomore Allison Evans got their second win as a duo in No. 2 doubles as well, dominating in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Amelia Lojewski and Crystal Fan.

However, Elizabethtown faltered in the remaining matches. Senior Lauren Masser fell 6-2, 6-1 in No. 1 singles to Cassidy Gleiberman, while junior Mia Giordano lost 6-2, 6-3 to Isabella Gerace in No. 3 singles. Seniors Araya Fahnestock and Katy Hackenburg dropped the No. 1 doubles 6-3, 6-2 to Maggie Auman and Sloane Kidan as well.

The Lady Bears went on the road Tuesday, Sept. 3, for a Section Two match against Solanco. The long-awaited victory finally arrived in a big way, as they swept the Golden Mules 7-0, not dropping a set across the seven matches.

Masser was strong in No. 1 singles, taking down Faith Redcay with a 6-0, 6-2 win. Weissend fought hard for a 6-4 victory in the first set of No. 2 singles against Olivia Baker before cruising to a 6-1 win in the second. Fahnestock posted matching 6-2 wins in No. 3 singles vs. Perla Martinez, while Giordano earned her first career singles win in the No. 4 spot 6-4, 6-2 against Michaela Brenneman.

Weissend and Masser handled Redcay and Baker 8-2 in No. 1 doubles, while Evans and Hackenburg picked up an 8-1 victory in No. 3 doubles against Sidney Beyer and Grace Pursel. The closest match on the day was in No. 2 doubles, with Fahnestock and Giordano topping Martinez and Brenneman 8-5.

Elizabethtown’s scheduled match at Penn Manor on Wednesday, Aug. 28, was postponed to Friday, Sept. 6, due to inclement weather. The Lady Bears (1-4) will also travel to Lampeter-Strasburg on Thursday, Sept. 5, and Garden Spot on Monday, Sept. 9.
