A candle company that began as a hobby in a Mount Joy couple’s home has moved into a 3,300-square-foot warehouse and office space off of Main Street in Mount Joy.
Fontana Candle Company operations moved into the new space on Thursday, Nov. 1. Located only a few minutes from its humble beginnings in founders Katie and Eric Roering’s home, the new location offers them the space they need to pour larger quantities of candles.
Katie and Eric Roering never intended to own a candle company. A few months into their marriage, the couple burned a big brand candle in their home for several hours. They both had headaches and realized it might be from the candle. After months of research and experimenting, they came up with a much less-toxic beeswax and coconut oil formula. Friends and family loved the candles and began to ask to purchase them; by February 2018, the Roerings decided to put to use their shared background in entrepreneurship and small business ownership, and Fontana Candle Company was born.
Fontana releases four collections a year with popular scents including Warm Vanilla, Blueberry Orchid, Cedar Leather, Grapefruit Rhubarb, Honeysuckle Nectar, Spiced Apple Cider, Gingerbread Cookie, and Merry Mistletoe, to name a few. All of the candles are hand-poured by the couple.
The Roerings were taken by surprise by the popularity of their candles and the quick growth that resulted for their company. Fontana Candles are found in 10 locations in Lancaster County, and also in boutiques as far away as Houston, Texas; Stowe, Vt.; and Cape May, N.J.
They also sell their candles directly to consumers through their website, www.fontanacandlecompany.com.
They hope to expand all segments of their business including direct to consumer sales, wholesale, and private label candles. They have several collaborations with other natural product companies in the works. Katie Roering is currently the only full-time employee.
“We created Fontana Candle Company out of a desire to fill our home with clean and beautiful products,” she said. “We want the same for your home too.”
