The Elizabethtown golf team opened its season 2-4 at Foxchase Golf Course in Ephrata and followed that up with a 2-4 day at Par Line Golf Course in Elizabethtown.
Freshman Alex Williams shot an 88 and carded the lowest score on the team on at Foxchase on Friday, Aug. 18. The lone senior on the team, Logan Hoover, was not too far behind with 92 strokes.
“I’ve played golf on and off for a while, but coming into this year I would’ve thought it would be a lot different,” Williams said. “I like Foxchase. It’s a nice course. I was happy to be able to shoot my best score over there.”
Hoover is fully embracing the role of elder statesman on the team with his signature golf knickers that he wears during matches. The fashion statement began with a family beach trip to South Carolina over the summer.
“We saw a shop called GolfKnickers.com, that was the sign on top of the store, and I said, ‘We have to go in.’ So I made my first purchase of golf knickers and I’ve loved them ever since,” Hoover said. “I was going to email the guys and look for a sponsorship to get free knickers, but I haven’t done that yet.”
The top four for Elizabethtown were rounded out by sophomore Eric Gilbert (100) and junior Connor Krisko (112).
Cocalico took the top spot (6-0) with 323 strokes. Lampeter-Strasburg (5-1, 344), Manheim Central (4-2, 364), Solanco (3-3, 365), Garden Spot (1-5, 397) and Ephrata (0-6, 403) rounded on the field.
Entering the match at Par Line on Tuesday, Aug. 22, Hoover and Williams said that their familiarity with the course would be helpful.
“None of the other teams have played consistently at Par Line. It’s kind of a new golf course to the L-L League. We definitely have the upper hand because we’ve been playing at Par Line consistenly,” Hoover said.
“There is a lot of stuff that, if you don’t play here consistenly, you don’t know about so I think we have a good advantage,” Williams said.
Williams and the rest of the Elizabethtown golf team went on to take the same finish at Par Line that they did at Foxchase.
Williams once again led the team as he carded a 95. Krisko finished his day in 99 strokes alongside Hoover (102) and Eric Gilbert (103).
Cocalico once again took the top spot with 322 strokes. Lampeter-Strasburg also continued its strong play (341) with a second place finish. Solanco was third (357), Manheim Central was fourth (364), Elizabethtown was fifth (399), Ephrata was sixth (400) and Garden Spot was seventh (434).
The team’s next match is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 24, at 1 p.m. at Iron Valley Golf Course.
