There’s one rifle team to beat in the Lancaster-Lebanon League right now, and it’s Elizabethtown Area High School. Through four matches, the Bears remain unbeaten, firmly planting the target on themselves when January rolls around.
The team hosted Ephrata on Thursday, Dec. 20, winning 497-493. The Mounts had a solid first round of shooting; all three of their shooters, Jada Rojas (100), Nichole Johnson (99) and Joshua Potts (99) ended up in the top five qualifying scores. Senior Matt Risbon led Elizabethtown with a 100, with sophomore Jagger Gilleland had a 98 and freshman Luke Barton had a 97.
However, the Bears’ second set of shooters put them over the top. Freshman Rachel Broomell had her second 100 of the season, while junior Bella Albino and sophomore Emma Kreiser chipped in with a 99 and a 98 as well. Only Brianna Bowers qualified for Ephrata with a 99.
Sophomore Cole Ginder added a third 100 for Elizabethtown in the final round, next to sophomore Tyler Chapman’s 98 and Emily Bonsall’s 96. Every shooter for the Bears at least matched Ephrata’s five qualifying scores. Jazmyn Spangler led the Mounts in the third round with a 96.
Heading into the holiday break undefeated at 5-0, Elizabethtown will battle last year’s L-L League champion Manheim Central on the road on Thursday, Jan. 4, followed by a return home Tuesday, Jan. 8, against Garden Spot.
