Marietta ‘River Wolf’ Turns Out to Be Lost Dog

Emergency Management Coordinator and Fire Police Director Steve Bailey told Marietta Borough Council at its monthly meeting that Facebook has had some interesting postings by borough residents regarding happenings on the Susquehanna River.

“We had raccoons. We had deer … Now, we had a ‘river wolf’ running around. And, there was like, what, 80 or 90 posts on Facebook about the ‘river wolf ?’” Bailey told council on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

He said a woman called him about a “wild wolf running around at Front and Gay streets.” But she said she didn’t call police.

“The bottom line is nobody ever called the police the whole time. They just posted on Facebook. Anyway, it was a dog,” Bailey said.

He said the dog escaped from a man living on Long Lane who was watching her for a friend. He had been afraid to tell his friend the dog was missing.

The owner, a man from Elizabethtown, saw his dog on Facebook and took her home, Bailey said.

Bailey also said some people posted on Facebook they were walking out on the ice on the Susquehanna River. He said that is the “dumbest thing that anybody can do.”

Council also discussed applying for grants to add a bicycle repair shop to the Marietta portion of the Northwest River Trail and to add bike racks to parks and the borough office.
