An open letter to Congressman Lloyd Smucker: I need to tell you how disappointed I am in your response to the recent separation of children from their parents at our southern border. Not only are the innocent parents, who are often fleeing for their lives, demonized, but having these families ripped apart — with lifelong trauma likely resulting for the kids — is not only unconscionable but decidedly un-Christian (or substitute any world religion, or even no religion).
I might regain a bit of respect for you if you would make a public statement disavowing the false idea that these would-be immigrants (particularly from Mexico, but also from Central and South America) are likely to be criminals. I can’t
imagine that you haven’t seen the multiple studies that confirm that immigrants are far less likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans. Please be honest and honorable by putting families back together — or keeping themtogether — and welcoming the stranger, as Jesus commanded us, which America has long represented.
We’ve been a beacon of light and hope to much of the world for almost 250 years, but now we’re suddenly nasty, xenophobic monsters. It’s horrifying, and you can do something about it. In the meantime, Jess King is looking better every day.
