Golf Season Passes Halfway Mark

The one-month-long golf season has officially passed the halfway mark with the fourth match of the season wrapping up at Meadia Heights Golf Club.

In the backyard of Lampeter-Strasburg, the Elizabethtown golf team finished sixth with 414 strokes on Monday, Aug. 28.

The top four golfers were within four shots of each other with sophomore Eric Gilbert leading the way (101). Freshman Alex Williams (102), junior Connor Krisko (105) and senior Logan Hoover (106) rounded out the top four.

Gilbert has proven to be Elizabethtown’s most consistent golfer as he has shot between 100-106 strokes in each of the team’s four matches.

“Eric is a steady player. I expected him to be under 100 each match and I think he has been around 102. The golf course on Thursday, Iron Valley, was a pretty difficult golf course,” coach Dave Kline said.

Hoover has also been able to provide consistent results in his three most recent matches with 102, 104 and 106.

Williams is the only Elizabethtown golfer to average less than 100 strokes per match.

Lampeter-Strasburg (356) defeated Cocalico (356) on a tiebreaker to win the match. Solanco (364), Manheim Central (373), Garden Spot (407) and Ephrata (419) rounded out the field.

The aforementioned match at Iron Valley Golf Course took place on Thursday, Aug. 24, and Krisko delivered the lowest score of the day (103).

Hoover was not far behind as he shot 104. Gilbert recorded a 106 and Williams carded 111 for a team score of 424, good enough for a sixth place finish.

Cocalico (332) won the event by beating out Manheim Central (348), Solanco (358), Lampeter-Strasburg (367), Garden Spot (420) and Ephrata (451).

The team’s record stands at 6-18 through four matches which already represents improvement over last season.

“We only won three matches all of last year. Coach Krisko keeps telling me, ‘Baby steps. We need to take one step at a time.’ We’re getting better and the kids are getting better. We’re trying to find a mix that works best and get all these kids to play,” Kline said.

The team will have three more matches to further improve their record. The next opportunity will come on Thursday, Sept. 7, at Foxchase Golf Club.

Following Foxchase, the team will travel to Tanglewood Golf Course on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The last match of the season is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 18, at Honeybrook Golf Club.
