EAHS Wrestling Uneven at Governor Mifflin Holiday Invitational

The Elizabethtown Area High School wrestling team had a pretty decent all-around outing in its first invitational meet of the season at Donegal on Friday, Dec. 21, and Saturday, Dec. 22. Just a week later at another meet, however, the results were not as fruitful.

The Bears ended up in 23rd out of 24 teams with a team score of 40.5 at the Governor Mifflin Holiday Wrestling Tournament, which took place on Friday, Dec. 28, and Saturday, Dec. 29. The event had a double-eliminationsetup, with five rounds taking place on Friday and the rest following on Saturday. Of the nine wrestlers that competed for Elizabethtown, just one made it to the second day to make it into the placements.

That was senior Cam Olson, who made it to the quarterfinals in the 126-pound weight class by winning via a 22-6 technical fall over Joseph O’Neill of Upper Darby. He then lost to Seth Hoopes of Octorara, who was undefeated entering the tournament, in a 6-3 decision.

Olson then beat Mike Milkowich of Upper Perkiomen in a 14-2 decision and Clay Gainer of Hempfield in a 13-1 decision during the consolation rounds before losing 11-4 to Anthony Gust of Wyomissing. Finally, he had a rematch against Hoopes in the fifth-place match for the 126, getting pinned to take sixth place overall.

Just one other Bear made it to the quarterfinals in their weight class.

Junior Cole Rice advanced to the 152 quarterfinals with a 7-3 decision win over Ryan Kernan of Octorara, falling to Colt Barley of Penn Manor thereafter. He would go on to lose in a 10-8 sudden victory to Andrew Connolly of Malvern.

Sophomore Bobby Walters (145) joined Olson as the two Elizabethtown wrestlers who had more than one win. He beat Kyren Turner of Oley Valley in the first round via a tight 4-3 decision, falling in the second to Zach Rozanski of Upper Perkiomen. Walters won his first consolation match against Michael Mc-Shea of State College in a 7-0 decision before losing 4-0 to Ethan Kosmoski of Wyomissing.

Two other Bears recorded victories as well. Senior Javan Thomas (170) was pinned by Russell Hanes of Hempfield to open up the tournament, winning his first consolation match vs. Maliki Rivera of Manheim Central in a 14-9 decision and then losing 6-2 to David Hnasko of Warwick.

Senior Elijah Stackhouse (285) had a similar journey, losing via pinfall to Zach Snuyder of Oley Valley before picking up his first non-forfeit win of the season by pinning Will Shallow of Malvern in the consolation round. He then fell to Mike Miller of Plymouth Whitemarsh.

Following a pinfall loss to Anthony Leone of Oley Valley, freshman Skyler Nagel (120) was able to pick up a forfeit win in his first consolation match due to Calvin Lederer of Neshaminy getting injured. He would thenlose to Marshall Adams of Warwick in a 15-3 decision. Freshman Wyatt Mummau (106), senior Zach Frank (160) and junior Ray Perez (195) lost each of their two matches.

Elizabethtown is set to Daubert Gym on Wednesday, Jan. 2, and Monday, Jan. 7, to take on Lebanon and Eastern Lebanon County, respectively. The Bears will also play host to the Grizzly Duels, featuring multiple other teams, on Saturday, Jan. 5.
