The Elizabethtown Area High School ice hockey club hasn’t exactly gotten off to a stellar start in 2018. Still looking for their first win since Jan. 30, 2017, the 0-3 Bears were looking to end their losing streak against Dallastown at Klick Lewis Arena near Palmyra on Friday, Nov. 9. Unfortunately for them, things didn’t go as planned.
The Wildcats were able to score 3 goals in the first five minutes of the game, thanks to makes from Gage Weaver, Trae Schanberger and Braydon Wise, the latter’s coming off an assist from Andrew Navaroli. They added two more late in the period off goals from Ethan Eckert (via a Trae Schanberger assist) and Quinn Eckert to go up 5-0.
Camden Schanberger would score on a short-handed play midway through the second, followed shortly by a second score from Trae Schanberger. Elizabethtown was finally able to find the net with just over seven minutes to go when Max Wetzel found Chris Haldeman on a power play for a score. It was the team’s first power-play goal of the season after missing out on its previous 22 attempts.
Brock Stitley tacked on an extra goal for Dallastown late in the game to give his team an 8-1 victory. Sami Saarinen had a fantastic game for the Wildcats at goalie, stopping 17 of Elizabethtown’s 18 shots. For the Bears, Jacob Gregory made 7 saves, upping his total to 51 on the season. He and fellow goalie Connor Vogelsong have faced 125 shots on goal so far this year.
Now 0-4 to start 2018, Elizabethtown has lost 23 straight games dating back to the 2016-17 season. The Bears will once again try to right the ship and get in the win column on Friday, Nov. 16, when they return to Klick Lewis Arena to take on the Trinity Shamrocks.
