Two Lancaster County high school boys rugby teams will be playing in the Division 2 Pennsylvania State High School Rugby Championships on Saturday, May 19, at Cumberland Valley High School.
The Elizabethtown Blues and the Hempfield Knightmares are both playing in semifinal matches Saturday. Hempfield will play the Narberth Otters in one semi-final match and Elizabethtown will face the Kiski Valley Titans in the other. The winners will move on to the Division 2 state championship match on Sunday, May 20.
Elizabethtown and Hempfield faced each other earlier this season. Hempfield won that match 27-26 at their home pitch. The two teams are hoping for a rematch on Sunday, but both have their work cut out for them to make that happen.
Even though Elizabethtown and Hempfield can consider their competition as a rivalry, the two clubs have a close relationship. Blues head coach Kenny Burke and Knightmares head coach Chris Knarr regularly share resources, have held practices and scrimmages together and are both involved in developing rugby in Lancaster County. They work with other local coaches and volunteers to organize a non-contact rugby program in the summer for boys and girls from kindergarten through 8th grade. Elizabethtown fielded its first ever middle school rugby program this spring for boys and girls in grades 5, 6 and 7.
