LNP Media Group is partnering with the dominant business organizations in Lancaster and York counties to hold a forum for voters in the newly redrawn 11th Congressional District in the runup to the Republican primary.
The forum featuring incumbent Rep. Lloyd Smucker and his challenger, Manheim-area businessman Chet Beiler, is being held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 30, at Columbia High School. Free tickets are available by calling 717-481-7335.
The winner of the May 15 primary will face Democratic candidate Jess King in the November election, as well as any independent candidates or nominees of other parties who qualify for the general election ballot.
The forum is sponsored by LNP Media Group, which publishes The Elizabethtown Advocate, LNP and LancasterOnline, as well as the Lancaster Chamber and the York County Economic Alliance. The moderators will be Tom Baldrige, president and CEO of the Chamber; Barbara Hough Roda, community liaison at LNP; and Kevin Schreiber, president and CEO of the Alliance.
The 11th Congressional District encompasses all of Lancaster County and southern York County.
Chet Beiler, a Manheimarea businessman, agreed to participate, saying he is “eager to engage with the public in this forum.”
The incumbent, Rep. Lloyd Smucker, initially declined to participate, but later decided to appear. A campaign spokesman at first said his participation in the forum, which is free and open to the public, would not be the “best use of time.”
Beiler, a former county party chairman who lost to Smucker in the Republican congressional primary two years ago, has not campaigned since surprising the local GOP by filing to get on the ballot in March, becoming the only Republican to challenge Smucker as he seeks his second term.
Smucker, of West Lampeter Township, is endorsed by the Republican Committee of Lancaster County.
