Elizabethtown Area High School orchestra students Sean Brown and Jared Wolf will be performing a fundraiser violin concert on Tuesday, March 12 and Wednesday, March 13 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium to raise money for the AP Government “We the People” Team’s upcoming trip to the Washington, D.C., area to compete in the National We the People Finals. The team asks the public to show support for the team by coming to these concerts, help spread the word to the community, and consider donating to help cover the monumental cost of this trip.
The “We the People” competition promotes civic competence and responsibility among the nation’s secondary students. At the national competition, Elizabethtown will join teams from the other 49 states in simulated congressional hearings on the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The United States Congress will provide rooms on Capitol Hill to the top 10 teams on the third day of competition to express their support for this important civic exercise.
At the national event, the students will prepare and deliver brief opening statements on constitutional questions and community scholars (professors, federal judges, attorneys, etc.) will respond to the opening statements with follow up questions. The competition judges will probe the students’ knowledge of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights requiring the students to defend their positions, apply core concepts to real situations, formulate reasoned judgments and sometimes even rethink their positions.
While student contributions and District donations have subsidized some of the overall costs, funds raised through this benefit concert will help close the shortfall in funding. If you are unable to attend the concert but still wish to support these exceptional students as they prepare to represent the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at the national event,
you can make a tax-deductible donation made payable to EAHS. Donations can be sent to Elizabethtown Area High School care of James Sostack, We the People Advisor, at 600 East High Street, Elizabethtown, PA 17022. For questions and general support, contact Sostack by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 717-367-1533.
