A large crowd gathered in Elizabethtown on Friday, March 30, for the Carry the Cross even held annually on Good Friday; the group carried crosses through the downtown area. The Christian holiday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and the events leading up to it as described in the New Testament. Christians believe the suffering Jesus endured on the cross allows him to atone for the sins of the human race.
The Elizabethtown Fire Department had fire police on scene to deal with traffic control during the event. Also, a fire engine was in the area that evening for an unrelated training event, Deputy Chief Jeremy M. Shaffner told the Advocate.
